Petitions on motor tax payments and North Dakota Pipeline among those to be considered by Committee

Petitions to be considered include:

•    Kindness and support to Native American nations in time of need - Stop the North Dakota pipeline.
•    Direct Debit Payments for Motor Tax in all classes;
•    Unconstitutionality of Courts Bill 2016;
•    Reform the petitions process;
•    Change the name of the 'Department of Justice and Equality' to the 'Department of legal affairs'.

Committee Chairman, Sean Sherlock TD, said “The strength of the public petitions system lies in the exciting opportunity it creates for the public to make sure their views are heard at heart of parliament. Tomorrow’s meeting will hear petitions relating to a variety of topics, including bringing in a direct debit payment system for motor tax, in line with procedures currently in place in Northern Ireland.”

“The Dakota Access Pipeline and the resulting standoff with the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe over a section running through tribal lands is an issue that could well have ramifications for environmental policy development and implementation worldwide. We will also consider petitions on the Courts Bill; changing the name of the Department of Justice and reforming the petitions system itself.”

All petitions will be examined for their compliance with Standing Orders and deliberations will be given in public session.

The meeting will start at 1.30pm in Committee Room 1, Leinster House, tomorrow, Wednesday 14th November 2016.
