The Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Defence met today in private session to consider a number of important issues, including the most recent developments in Eastern Aleppo in Syria.
Committee Chairman, Brendan Smith TD, said “At our private meeting of the Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Defence Committee today, Members were united in their condemnation of the most recent developments in Eastern Aleppo. The relentless slaughter of innocent civilians which we are seeing is to be condemned in the strongest possible terms and the Committee are calling for the international community to take immediate action in protecting the human rights of the most vulnerable.”
“The Committee have repeatedly called for resolution through dialogue and highlighted the devastating and wide reaching humanitarian consequence that is being seen as a direct result of this conflict but it now appears that this situation has drastically deteriorated for those on the ground, rather than improved.”
“This conflict has brought a city to its knees, it has unfolded over more than 5 years and led directly to the mass migration of people that we are seeing across Europe and beyond. The pictures which we are seeing, and reports we are reading, tell a story of atrocity and suffering and there is no option but for an immediate and binding ceasefire to be put in place in order for resolution to be found.”
