EU Committee to meet with the Head of the Commission Representation to Ireland and the Ecumenical Accompaniment Programme in Palestine and Israel

17 Jan 2017, 12:27

17 January 2017

The Joint Committee on European Union Affairs will tomorrow hold a two-part meeting on matters under their remit. To begin, the Committee will meet with Mr. Gerry Kiely, Head of Representation of the European Commission Representation in Ireland. The Committee will consider the European Commission’s Annual Work Programme and the work of the Representation in Ireland.

The Committee will then meet with Mr. Alex Dunne, Mr Patrick Costello and Ms Jenny Derbyshire of the Ecumenical Accompaniment Programme in Palestine and Israel (EAPPI) to consider the policy implications for the European Union of the EAPPI’s work.

The meeting will commence at 2.00pm in Committee Room 1 tomorrow, Wednesday, 18 January 2017.

Committee Chairman, Michael Healy Rae TD, said “The European Commission’s Annual Work Programme sets out 10 specific priorities for 2017 and we welcome the opportunity to hear from Mr. Kiely on how these priorities can be delivered upon. It is also our first opportunity, as a Committee, to engage with Mr. Kiely, the Head of Representation of the European Commission Representation in Ireland, and so Members look forward to receiving a general update on the work of the Representation in Ireland in, what are, challenging times for the Union.”

“The Committee will then meet with representatives of the EAPPI. The EAPPI was set up in response to an appeal from local church leaders to create an international presence in the region. In 2017, the EAPPI will mark 15 years of bringing volunteers to the region and assisting Palestinians and Israelis who work in non-violent ways for peace. Their work has a direct link with human rights organisations, NGO’s and indeed the many agencies of the European Union itself.”
