Good Friday Committee to discuss Brexit’s effect on Peace Process and situation in Northern Ireland

8 Feb 2017, 14:01

The Joint Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement will meet tomorrow, Thursday, 09 February at 2:15pm in Committee Room 2, Leinster House.

08 February 2017

The Committee will continue its examination of the implications of Brexit for the Good Friday Agreement and its Institutions.

Mr. Paschal Donohue, Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform, will address the Committee.

Committee Chairperson, Kathleen Funchion TD said, “In light of Brexit, the Committee is very concerned about the future safeguarding of the EU funded cross border programmes PEACE and INTERREG. These programmes have contributed significantly to economic and social development in the North and the border region, supporting businesses and leading to job creation, investing in skills training and funding important peace and reconciliation projects, benefiting hundreds of thousands of people.\"

\"It is vitally important that these programmes continue. The significant funding provided by the EU to these programmes must not be affected by Britain’s withdrawal from the EU. We look forward to hearing from the Minister how the Government proposes to address this serious matter. “

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
