Social Protection Committee to meet Labour Market Council as part of hearings on Labour Activation Measures

8 Feb 2017, 09:53

The Committee on Social Protection will continue its hearings on labour activation measures tomorrow, Thursday, 9 February 2017 when it meets with Dr John Sweeney from the Labour Market Council.

The Labour Market Council is an independent group appointed by the Minister to oversee the effective delivery of the Pathways to Work strategy which sets out a comprehensive reform of the State’s approach to helping unemployed jobseekers return to work.

Committee Chairman John Curran said: “Tomorrow, we will continue our hearings on Labour activation measures with Dr John Sweeney from the Labour Market Council. In its response to the Pathways to Work 2016-2020, the Council said that while the strategy addresses a number of important challenges, it believes that this strategy has the potential to be more ambitious in its targets. We will be interested in discussing the Pathways to Work strategy and other labour activation measures with the Council and we will be particularly keen to hear its recommendations on what measures it would like to see implemented to deliver high quality services to people who are unemployed.”

This Committee will meet at 10am in Committee Room 4 tomorrow, Thursday, 9 February 2017.

Committee proceedings can be viewed live here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
