Petitions on fishing legislation and a tobacco-free ireland among those to be considered by Committee

The Joint Committee on Public Petitions will meet tomorrow to consider a number of public petitions received.

21 February 2017

Petitions to be considered include:

•    Petition No P00021/16 – Investigate circumstances relating to flawed implementation of fishing legislation
•    Petition No P00022/16 – Ireland should join the Antarctic Treaty
•    Petition No P00023/16 – Acknowledgement of, and response to, correspondence by Government Ministers
•    Petition No P00025/16 – Creating a Tobacco Free Ireland
•    Petition No P00005/17 – Make co-operation with Trump administration conditional on human rights
•    Petition No P00006/17 – Stop the Taoiseach attending St. Patrick’s Day event with Donald Trump

Committee Chairman, Sean Sherlock TD, said “At tomorrow’s meeting, we will deal with petitions relating to national and international issues. Petitions regarding Taoiseach’s visit to Washington for St. Patrick’s Day and the human rights priorities of the Trump administration are up for discussion, as well as a petition asking the Irish Government to sign the Antarctic Treaty to demonstrate that Ireland is committed to preserving the continent of Antarctica. We will also discuss petitions suggesting that Ireland do more to significantly reduce smoking and issues relating to fishing legislation.”

All petitions will be examined for their compliance with Standing Orders and decisions will be given in public session.

The meeting will start at 1.30pm in Committee Room 1, Leinster House, tomorrow, Wednesday, 22 February 2017.
