Education Committee to discuss the work of Caranua with CEO Mary Higgins

The Joint Committee on Education and Skills will tomorrow conduct a two-part meeting on maters under their remit. In Session A the Committee will continue their pre-legislative scrutiny of the Education (Amendment) Bill 2015 & the General Scheme of an Education (Parent and Student Charter) Bill 2016.

In Session B the Committee will discuss the work of Caranua with Mary Higgins, CEO. The Committee will also hear from Mr. David O’Callaghan, Chair of the Caranua Board and Mr. David Yeomans, Director of Finance & Corporate Affairs.

Session A will commence at 4.00pm in Committee Room 4 tomorrow, Tuesday, 30 May 2017 with Session B to follow at approximately 5.30pm.

Committee Chairperson, Fiona O’Loughlin TD, said “We welcome the opportunity to meet with Ms. Higgins and her officials tomorrow to discuss the role and function of Caranua. As the body responsible for managing the statutory redress fund for those affected by institutional abuse, their work is of the utmost importance. Members welcome the opportunity to engage on issues such as how suitable the application procedure has been, the take up of the service that they provide and also discuss some of the adverse media coverage that they have received in recent times.”

“We will also meet with various bodies to continue our pre-legislative scrutiny of the Education (Amendment) Bill 2015 & examination of the General Scheme of an Education (Parent and Student Charter) Bill 2016. We will hear from the Education and Training Boards Ireland, An Foras Pátrúnachta, Educate Together, the Association of Community and Comprehensive Schools, the Muslim Primary Education Board, the General Synod Board of Education of the Church of Ireland, the National Association of Boards of Management in Special Education, the Joint Managerial Body/Association of Management of Catholic Secondary Schools and the Catholic Primary Schools Management Association.”
