Education Committee to discuss fire safety in schools

25 Sep 2017, 09:58

Breaches in fire safety at a number of primary schools nationwide will be on the agenda of the Committee on Education and Skills when it meets with the Minister for Education and Skills Richard Bruton, TD tomorrow, Tuesday, 26 September 2017.

Committee Chair Fiona O’Loughlin, TD said: “Fire safety audits carried out in five schools built under the ‘rapid build’ school programme identified breaches in first safety standards and recommended that remedial works to bring them up to fire safety compliance standards.

Reports of fire safety lapses in a number of recently-built primary schools are obviously an issue of huge concern and it is an issue that the Committee is keen to raise with the Minister. We will be interested to ascertain what is being done to make sure the schools in question are upgraded to the required standard and if the Department is reviewing other schools built in the recent past as well as current building projects to ensure they are compliant with fire safety regulations.”

This meeting starts at 4pm on Tuesday, 26 September 2017 in Committee Room 2 Leinster House. Committee proceedings can be viewed live here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
