Oireachtas Open Data

24 Oct 2017, 13:15

As part of the Houses of the Oireachtas Open Data policy, most of the information published on the Oireachtas beta website is also being made available through a new open data API, https://api.oireachtas.ie. An API, or application programming interface, enables developers access Oireachtas datasets programmatically for analysis or to incorporate them into new and innovative applications.

The great majority of what is published is already available under the Houses of the Oireachtas (Open Data) Licence. This open data licence is based on Creative Commons 4.0 licence, which is the global standard for allowing reuse of open data with minimal restrictions.

The collections available via Oireachtas APIs include XML of debates dating back to 1919, digitised Bills and Acts and other documents published on the beta website. The service also allows users to query metadata about debates, votes and bills since the foundation of the State, as well as parliamentary questions since 2012. The range and variety of data that is published will continue to expand over 2018 and 2019.
