Petitions Committee to discuss petition from Junior Cert pupil

24 Oct 2017, 14:54

The Joint Committee on Public Petitions will meet tomorrow at 1.30pm in Committee Room 2, Leinster House

The Committee will deal with the following petitions:

• Petition No P000013/17 – Make the new English Junior Cert Exam fairer by adding thirty extra minutes.
• Petition No P00031/16 – Provision of Mosques and Islamic Education to children of Muslim minority in Ireland.
• Petition No P00037/16 – Company Secretary and Director.
• Petition No P00030/17 – Request for Amending Legislation relating to dog control.
• Petition No. P00023/2017 – Open an ASD Unit in all Primary and Secondary Schools.

Committee Chair, Seán Sherlock TD, said, “The petitions we will deal with tomorrow are varied but each one has a specific aim to achieve. That’s includes one from a student who wishes to see 30 extra minutes added to the Junior Certificate English exam. The petitioner feels that the two hours assigned for this examination does not provide students with enough time to finish the exam or review, assess or adjust answers within the timeframe.”

“We will also return to a petition seeking to open an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Unit in all primary and secondary schools, something many families around the country will keen to understand the benefits that such a move could bring.”

“We will also discuss legislation relating to dog control, including issues relating to noise pollution and dogs being kept on leashes in public places.”
