Students to address Irish Language Committee as part of Seachtain na Gaeilge

7 Mar 2018, 15:20

The Joint Committee on the Irish Language, the Gaeltacht and the Islands will hear from second-level students on the issues that concern them at its meeting tomorrow, Thursday, 8 March.

As part of Seachtain na Gaeilge, students from Coláiste Ghobnait; Coláiste Naomh Éinne; Coláiste Naomh Eoin and Gaelcholáiste Reachrann will get a chance to tell politicians what they think are opportunities, challenges and obstacles facing school-leavers over the coming years.

Chairperson of the Committee Catherine Connolly TD: “Seachtain na Gaeilge is a renowned international Irish language festival and one of the biggest celebrations of our native language and culture which takes place every year and it is fitting that the Committee on the Irish Language, the Gaeltacht and the Islands marks it in Leinster House. It’s also a fantastic opportunity for young people to visit the Houses of the Oireachtas and talk to politicians about issues which are important to them. It’s also a chance for us to hear from the next generation of voters on a number of important topics which matter to them. By engaging with students through Irish in Leinster House, we make the parliament more relevant and meetings like this play an important role in keeping our language alive and part of our everyday lives.”

This meeting will take place at 3pm in Committee Room 4, Leinster House. Committee proceedings can be viewed live here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
