EU Affairs Committee & Seanad Brexit Committee delegation to meet with David Davis

26 Mar 2018, 10:15

A delegation of members from the Joint Committee on EU Affairs and the Seanad Special Select Committee on the Withdrawal of the UK from the EU are in London today and tomorrow for a series of meetings on Brexit.

The delegation, led by Michael Healy-Rae TD (Chair of the EU Affairs Committee) and Senator Neale Richmond (Chair of the Seanad Special Select Committee on the Withdrawal of the UK from the EU), will meet with key stakeholders in the Brexit process, including Secretary of State, David Davis, Minister for the Cabinet Office, David Liddington, and a number of Westminster Committee Chairs and Committee members.

Speaking in advance of the meetings, EU Affairs Committee Chair, Michael Healy-Rae TD, said, “This trip affords us a valuable opportunity to engage directly with some of the key UK figures involved in the Brexit process. Of particular significance are our meetings with Secretary of State, David Davis, and the Chairs and party spokespersons on Brexit.  A number of the committees we will be meeting with have published important reports on Brexit recently and it is crucial that we engage with these committees and take an all-encompassing view of the issues Brexit raises.”

Seanad Special Committee Chair, Senator Neale Richmond said, “On Friday, the European Council adopted guidelines on the framework for post-Brexit relations with the UK. This is a timely opportunity for our two committees to liaise with our counterparts in Westminster in order to make sure that Irish interests are to the fore during negotiations on the Withdrawal Agreement covering citizens' rights, Northern Ireland, and other withdrawal issues and the transition and to explore with them where they see solutions to the remaining challenges emerging from. Constructive, respectful input can play an important role in laying the groundwork for a solutions-based approach to the many issues that Brexit has laid before us. As such, this is an important trip and one that we hope will contribute towards limiting the negative effects of Brexit on the peoples of Ireland and Northern Ireland.”
