Irish Water to brief Housing Committee on Water Supply Project for the Eastern and Midlands Region

24 Apr 2018, 17:06

The Joint Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government will meet tomorrow at 9.30am in Committee Room 1, Leinster House.

The agenda for the meeting is as follows:

• Response to National Emergencies
Representatives from Irish Water

• Consideration of Water Supply Project – Eastern and Midlands Region
Ms. Emma Kennedy, Founder of Kennedy Analysis
Representatives from Irish Water

Committee Chair, Maria Bailey TD, said today, “The Committee will hear from Irish Water on their overall approach to managing emergency situations, particularly in light of recent extreme weather events. The Committee will question Irish Water on their incident response systems and how the organisation plans for extreme weather, pollution and critical asset failure events.”

“Tomorrow’s meeting with Irish Water will also see the Committee engage directly with Irish Water on the Water Supply Project, Eastern and Midlands Region. The proposed project would see Irish water pump 300 million litres of water daily from the River Shannon at the Parteen Basin to Dublin. The Committee will want to discuss issues such as the cost, environmental impact, and planning. With the Eastern and Midlands region continuing to increase in population, it is vital that plans are in place to address water supply needs safely and efficiently.”
