Seanad Éireann to host commemoration event to mark centenary of the Upper House

12 Dec 2022, 11:06

On Monday, 12th December 2022, the Cathaoirleach of Seanad Éireann, Senator Mark Daly will preside over a commemoration event to mark 100 years of Seanad Éireann.

Speaking in advance of the commemoration event, Senator Daly said “As we mark the end of the centenary year of Seanad Éireann, we reflect on our theme of “Minority Voices, Major Changes” which is as relevant now as it was 100 years ago. In the course of this year we have remembered and celebrated former Senators who championed minority voices. They have left a lasting impact on our daily life. The Seanad must continue to progress minority issues, to recognise and reflect minority voices and to influence the change necessary to create a better society for all.”

Senators will meet in the Dáil Chamber, where the first Seanad sat in 1922. They will be joined by members of Government, members of the European Parliament, members of the Judiciary, members of the Diplomatic Corps and former members of Seanad Éireann.

The commemorative event will include a reflection by Dr John Bowman, historian and broadcaster.

A formal sitting of Seanad Éireann will then be opened by the Cathaoirleach of the Seanad, Senator Mark Daly.

The formal sitting will be marked with an address by Taoiseach Micheál Martin TD.

The Seanad Group leaders will then give a short address. Leas Cathaoirleach, Senator Joe O’Reilly will make a closing address. Proceedings will conclude at 1.30pm.

The event will be broadcast live on Oireachtas TV.
