Joint Committee on Environment and Climate Action to examine recommendations of Report of Citizens’ Assembly with Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage

The Joint Committee on Environment and Climate Action will meet tomorrow, Tuesday, 14 November, to resume its examination of the Report of the Citizens’ Assembly on Biodiversity Loss with officials from the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage.

Ahead of the meeting at 11am in Committee Room 3 of Leinster House, Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Brian Leddin said: “At our meetings over recent weeks, the Committee has examined with key stakeholders the recommendations of the Citizens’ Assembly on Biodiversity Loss across different sectors and also covered constitutional and financial matters.

“The National Parks and Wildlife Service is an executive agency of the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage and is tasked with providing scientific advice relating to nature conservation including undertaking extensive habitat and species surveys; the designation of protected areas; the management of national parks and nature reserves; the implementation of conservation measures; safeguarding and enforcement of legislation; and engagement across government, EU, at global level and with wider society.

“The Committee looks forward to discussing with the Department officials the role the NPWS can play in developing and monitoring the implementation of the recommendations of the Citizens Assembly on Biodiversity Loss, and related matters.”

The Joint Committee on Environment and Climate Action has 14 Members, nine from the Dáil and five from the Seanad.
