22 Jan 2024, 17:37

The Joint Committee on Assisted Dying will meet on Tuesday January 23rd to discuss assisted dying with healthcare professionals.

The meeting will take place in Committee Room 1 of Leinster House between 11:00-14:00.

Representatives from the Medical Council and Voluntary Assisted Dying Australia and New Zealand (VADANZ) will appear at the Committee.

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Michael Healy Rae said: “We welcome the opportunity to resume our discussions with healthcare professionals regarding assisted dying.

The Medical Council regulates medical doctors in the Republic of Ireland. It publishes a Guide to Professional Conduct and Ethics for Registered Medical Practitioners which provides guidance to doctors on matters related to professional conduct and ethics, including professional conduct, responsibilities to patients, medical records and confidentiality, consent to medical treatment and professional practice.

The Voluntary Assisted Dying Australia and New Zealand (VADANZ) was established to support the growing community of multidisciplinary health professionals providing voluntary assisted dying in Australia and New Zealand, and to provide a voice for them to share their insights. VADANZ state that they wish to ensure that voluntary assisted dying “continues to be a safe, accessible and sustainable choice for eligible patients long-term”.

“We look forward to discussing what raining might be required for doctors and healthcare professional working within an assisted dying system and what learnings we can take from the implementation of New Zealand’s system if AD is introduced here.”
