24 Jan 2024, 16:13

The Joint Committee on Public Petitions will meet tomorrow, Thursday, 25 January 2024, to discuss the petition “Create a walking and cycling greenway on the closed railway from Sligo to Athenry” from Western Rail Trail Campaign.

The meeting at 1.30pm in Committee Room 4 of Leinster House will hear from the petitioner, Brendan Quinn and John Mulligan, Western Rail Trail; Cllr Marie Casserly, Sligo Greenway Co-op, Bernice Brennan - Kiltimagh - East Mayo Greenway Campaign, Shaun Cunniffe - Tuam Galway, Quiet Man Greenway campaign.

Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Martin Browne said: “This petition seeks to create a greenway on the disused railway from Galway to Sligo. This is important petition for people living in Galway, Mayo, Sligo further afield. The restoration of our national railway network can go hand in hand with the construction of greenways as has happened on the Old Rail Trail on the Mullingar – Moate – Athlone railway.

There are also a number of other petitions which will be considered including:

Public Petition Number P00045/23 “Accept our cash” This deals with the increasing tendency towards contactless payments to the detriment of people who prefer cash.

Petition Number P00049/23 “Extra Time to be introduced as a Reasonable Accommodation for Dyslexic Students in State Examinations (Junior Cycle & Leaving Certificate)”

Public Petition Number P00026/23 “Equal Opportunity for HSE Counselling Positions” (resumed)

The Joint Committee on Public Petitions is a standing Committee of the Houses of the Oireachtas and has 11 Members, seven from the Dáil and four from the Seanad.

The meeting in the Committee Room 4 can be viewed live on Oireachtas TV.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
