Joint Committee on Assisted Dying to discuss a system for assisted dying and alternative policies with the Department of Health and the HSE

12 Feb 2024, 16:27

The Joint Committee on Assisted Dying will meet on Tuesday February 13th on the topic of examining a system for assisted dying and alternative policies.

The meeting will take place in Committee Room 4 of Leinster House between-11:00- 14:00.

Representatives from the Department of Health and the Health Service Executive (HSE) will appear at the Committee.

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Michael Healy-Rae said: “This is our final public meeting in our series of Committee meetings. We welcome the opportunity to discuss what a potential system for assisted dying would look like if it was introduced and what the alternative policies are surrounding end of life and palliative care with representatives from the Department of Health and the HSE."

"The HSE as a statutory agency for Health and Social care services will implement any legislation enacted in the future in accordance with its remit."

"As there is no legislation in place for assisted dying, HSE representatives can not give commentary on exact requirements for implementation. However, they can provide the committee with some of the issues that they as clinicians, consider need further thought based on previous testimonies from witnesses to this Committee."

Watch the meeting live on www.oireachtas.ie or on the Oireachtas smartphone app for Apple and Android.  There will be live ISL interpretation for the broadcasts tomorrow.
