19 Feb 2024, 15:39

The Joint Committee on Children, Equality, Disability, Integration & Youth will meet tomorrow, Tuesday 20th February in Committee Room 4 at 3pm to resume engagement with stakeholders regarding “Protection of Children in the use of Artificial Intelligence”.

The meeting will hear from:

Ms Niamh Hodnett, Online Safety Commissioner, Coimisiún na Meán

Ms Karen McAuley, Director of Policy, Children and Vulnerable Adults, Coimisiún na Meán

Mr Declan McLoughlin, Director of Codes and Rules, Coimisiún na Meán

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Kathleen Funchion TD said “We resume our engagement on the use of Artificial Intelligence tomorrow and we will seek in-depth information from Coimisiún na Meán on what safety measures are currently in place for children using this technology and how they feel their plans and actions can be implemented and strengthened to continue the common goal of protecting our young people.

“We reiterate our approval of the EU’s introduction of the Artificial Intelligence Act earlier this month. This legislation seeks to establish a new regulatory framework for AI, acknowledging the crucial role of data in its development while striving to balance innovation with individual rights. We also note the concerns from commentators that child safety can be strengthened within this legislation.”
