Europe Day | 9 May

On 9 May each year the anniversary of the Schuman Declaration of 1950 is marked through Europe Day.

This year's celebration comes as citizens prepare to elect a new European Parliament and it also marks 20 years since the 2004 enlargement of the EU, which saw ten countries joining in a period when Ireland held the EU Presidency.

Ireland: a parliamentary democracy

Ireland is a parliamentary democracy. The National Parliament (Oireachtas) consists of the President and two Houses: Dáil Éireann (House of Representatives) and Seanad Éireann (the Senate) whose functions and powers derive from the Constitution of Ireland enacted by the people on 1 July 1937. The Houses of the Oireachtas are situated at Leinster House, Dublin.
