Vol. 161 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Income-Tax Allowances for Children.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the number of children for whom income-tax allowances were claimed in the last financial year for which such information is available, and the number thereof who were 16 years of age or more.

There are no records available to show the number of children for whom income-tax allowances were claimed in any financial year. It may be stated, however, that the total number of children in respect of whom income-tax allowances were granted in assessments for 1954-55 was approximately 91,000. It is not known how many of those children were 16 years of age or more.

Is it possible even to give an approximate estimate?

I am afraid not.
