Vol. 169 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Moy Drainage: Effects on Fisheries.

asked the Minister for Lands (a) whether he has taken any steps to inquire into the effect on the various fishery interests in the River Moy and its tributaries that will result from the proposed drainage of that river, (b) what the estimated financial effect is likely to be, (c) whether it will cause unemployment, and, if so, to what extent, and (d) what steps he proposes to take to offset that unemployment either by (i) compensation, (ii) the provision of alternative employment, or (iii) both.

It is not yet possible to assess the likely effect of the River Moy catchment drainage scheme upon the fisheries of that river system. The Deputy may rest assured that my concern will be to eliminate or minimise any injury that might be sustained by the fisheries and to that end consultation is taking place between my Department and the Office of Public Works.
