Vol. 237 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - CIE Engine Drivers.

44.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if he is aware of the anxiety and hardship caused to CIE engine drivers who are paid off because they cannot continue their job through ill-health and, therefore, lose their pension rights if this occurs before the age of 55; and whether he proposes to take any steps to rectify this situation.

I am aware that the limit of 55 years for pension qualification applies to the wages grade pension schemes for CIE employees negotiated between the trade unions and the company.

Under section 44 (5) of the Transport Act, 1950, it would be for the board to submit amendments to these schemes for my approval. Any such amendment as the Deputy has in mind would, in the first place, be a matter for negotiation between the board and the trade unions concerned.
