Ireland has been consistent in its response to humanitarian emergencies in Africa over the past number of years and continues to commit substantial funds to humanitarian relief efforts through the UN and through Irish and international non-governmental organisations.
We have kept our focus on Africa in funding matters, despite the media attention devoted to other emergencies around the world. This year the Oireachtas approved an additional £6 million for the victims of the Kosovo crisis so as to ensure that funding for humanitarian crises in Africa and other parts of the world would not be affected.
Details of all emergency humanitarian funding provided by the Government for the years 1995 to 1998 are outlined in the Ireland Aid annual reports, available from the Dáil Library. In 1999, the Government has allocated a total of £3,230,525 for emergency humanitarian projects in ten countries in Africa. Details on the projects funded and the amounts allocated to each follow.
