The Joint Committee on Assisted Dying has been formed to consider and make recommendations for legislative and policy change relating to a statutory right to assist a person to end his or her life (assisted dying) and a statutory right to receive such assistance.
Getting help
If you are affected by the issues raised by this Committee, you can ring the Samaritans on 116 123 or visit the Samaritans website to find details of the nearest branch.
Journalists: If you are covering a suicide-related issue, please consider following the Samaritans’ media guidelines on the reporting of suicide, due to the potentially damaging consequences of irresponsible reporting.
Final report of the Joint Committee on Assisted Dying
The Committee recommends that legislation be introduced to allow for assisted dying in certain restricted circumstances but that where any person has failed to adhere to relevant statutory requirements governing assisted dying, he or she will have committed a criminal offence.
The Committee also recommends that doctors and health care workers involved with the provision of assisted dying be trained to the highest level possible to identify coercion when assessing or treating a patient.
