Vol. 5 No. 14

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - OIREACHTAS MEMBERS AND INCOME TAX.

asked the Minister for Finance whether, in view of the financial situation, he will consider the desirability of deducting Income Tax (and Super-Tax where liability exists) from the salaries of Deputies and Senators before payment.

The sums payable to Deputies and Senators are allowances towards expenses, and are not chargeable to Income Tax.

Arising out of that answer, is the Minister aware that it is a matter of the deepest possible sorrow to Deputies that they are not in a position to pay super-tax?

I can well believe that.
