Vol. 59 No. 15

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Increase in Tramway Fares.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he has concluded his examination of the information furnished to him by the Dublin United Tramways Company in support of the recent increase in their fares; whether he is satisfied as a result of the examination that tram fares in Dublin have been increased by more than 50 per cent. in several instances; whether he is aware that the substantial increase in the cost of transport in Dublin, resulting from these increased tram fares, is inflicting grave injury on working-class people who took up residence in the newly-built areas on the outskirts of the city, and whether he is in a position to indicate the steps he proposes taking in regard to the matter.

I am aware that the recent increases in tram fares in Dublin have in a few instances amounted to 50 per cent. but, on the whole, the increase is very much less. It is difficult to reach an exact percentage figure owing to the alterations in stages. I am not yet in a position to indicate the steps, if any, that it may be necessary to take in the matter.

Does the Minister propose to inform the House before it adjourns of the steps he proposes to take?

If I am in a position to do so, which I do not think is likely.

Can the Minister give any indication as to when these steps will be taken because the burden is at present being borne by the citizens?

I am unable to do that.

Does the Minister propose to take any really effective action in the matter?

It may be for years and it may be for ever.
