Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Public Works Expenditure.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state (i) the total amount provided under the Vote for Public Works and Buildings over each of the periods 1st April, 1932, to 31st March, 1939; 1st April, 1939 to 31st March, 1945, and 1st April, 1945, to 31st March, 1948; (ii) the average annual amount provided over each of the aforesaid periods; (iii) the total amount of expenditure, if any, in each such period treated as capital expenditure and defrayed out of borrowed moneys, and (iv) in respect of each period the proportion which the expenditure so defrayed bore to the total expenditure over the period.

The information asked for is as follows:—

(i) The total amount provided under the Vote for Public Works and Buildings in each of the following periods was:—

(iii) and (iv) Information as to the total amount of Supply Services expenditure regarded as capital and defrayed from borrowings is contained in the various financial statements and, since 1938, in the printed tables issued in connection therewith. The deductions for capital expenditure in the years in question were intended as a global allowance for the capital elements in the Vote for Public Works and Buildings and other Votes and it is not possible to assign them to specific services.

We shall deal with that later.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state (i) the total amount provided under the sub-head for new works, etc., in the Vote for Public Works and Buildings for the erection, enlargement or reconstruction of schools and colleges over the periods (a) 1st April, 1932, to 31st March, 1940; (b) 1st April, 1940, to 31st March, 1946; (c) 1st April, 1946, to 31st March, 1948; (ii) the average annual amount provided over each of the periods; (iii) the average annual revenue over each period; (iv) the proportion of (ii) to (iii) expressed as a percentage of the latter; (v) the amount of the expenditure over each period which was regarded as capital and defrayed out of borrowed moneys; (vi) in respect of each period the average annual expenditure so defrayed; and (vii) the proportion of (vi) to (iii) expressed as a percentage of the latter.

The information asked for is as follows:—

(i) The total amount provided under the sub-head for new works, etc., in the Vote for Public Works and Buildings for the erection, enlargement or reconstruction of schools and colleges in the following periods was:—
