Vol. 164 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Birr Hospital and Clinic.

asked the Minister for Health if he will sanction at an early date the acquisition of a site for an entrance to the new hospital and clinic at Birr, so that these buildings may be put to use as soon as possible.

The Offaly County Council made a Compulsory Acquisition Order to acquire the private roadway known as John's Terrace, Birr, for the purpose of providing a new approach and entrance to the local district hospital and clinic. The council considered that the present entrance to the hospital, the reconstruction of which is now nearing completion, was inadequate and unsuitable. The Order was duly submitted for confirmation. As objections were lodged against the Order, it was necessary, in accordance with the provisions of Section 83 of the Health Act, 1947, to hold a public local inquiry into the propriety of confirming the Order. The inquiry was was held in Birr in June last and the report of the inspector who held the inquiry is at present being examined in my Department.

The objectors to the Order suggested that other alternative and suitable entrances were available. Before coming to a decision on the question of confirming the Order, I shall have to be satisfied as to the suitability or otherwise of the alternative entrances suggested. Consideration of the inspector's report is now almost complete and I hope to reach a decision soon on the matter.
