Vol. 172 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Galway Forestry Operations.

15.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will take steps to have increased activity brought about by the Forestry Section of his Department in the Woodford area of County Galway.

The programme of forestry work being undertaken at present in the Woodford area is as extensive as possible having regard to the reserve of land available for planting there. The total area being planted at Woodford forest this year is 200 acres, compared with 100 acres last year.

Further expansion must depend on the acquisition of more land and I am glad to say that the acquisition position is encouraging. Agreement to purchase six areas totalling 621 acres has been reached and title is in course of clearance; negotiations for the purchase of nine other areas totalling 1,290 acres are in progress and there are a substantial number of cases at the preliminary investigation stages.
