Vol. 179 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Cork Telephone Kiosk.

20.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware of the need for a public telephone kiosk at Shinaugh Creamery, Dunmanway, County Cork; and if he will take steps to have it erected.

The use likely to be made of a public telephone kiosk at Shinaugh Creamery would not be sufficient to justify the erection of a kiosk there.

Is the Minister aware that over 100 farmers supply milk to this creamery? A request from such a representative body of farmers should not be treated so lightly. The farmers of the area are of the opinion that sufficient use would be made of the telephone kiosk. At present the nearest one is five miles away. This telephone would be very useful for the farmers if they had to call a priest, doctor or veterinary surgeon. It would mean they would not have to travel——

The Deputy is making a speech.

I would ask the Minister to consider the position again.

There is no post office at Shinaugh and it is not the practice of the postal authorities to provide kiosks where there is not a post office. The only advice I can give the Deputy is that the creamery might install an ordinary coin-box telephone on rental from the post office.

If representations are made on behalf of the creamery at Shinaugh, will the Minister see to it that the line is extended as far as the creamery?

I shall look into the matter.

Thank you.
