Vol. 199 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Operation of Helicopters.

38.

asked the Minister for Defence whether there are any members of the Defence Forces qualified to operate helicopters; and, if not, what period would be necessary to train personnel in the competent operation of them.

No members of na Buan-Óglaigh are qualified to operate helicopters.

I cannot at present state the precise period which would be necessary to train personnel for the purpose but the information available to date indicates that it would take about four months for a pilot of an tAer Chór to be so trained. I might add that this matter, in common with all other aspects of providing a helicopter service, is being dealt with on a priority basis arising out of the Government's decision that such a service shall be established.

Would the Minister say if any member of the Defence Forces has been selected yet to train in helicopter operations?

I do not think so.
