2.

(South Tipperary) asked the Taoiseach the annual importexport figures over the past five years between Great Britain and (a) Denmark, (b) New Zealand, (c) Australia, (d) Canada, and (e) the Irish Republic.

I propose, with your permission, Sir, to circulate in the Official Report, the information required by the Deputy, for imports to and exports from Great Britain, including the Channel Islands, and the Six Counties, for the years 1958-62, as extracted from the United Kingdom Trade and Navigation Accounts. Such information is not available for Great Britain alone.

Following is the statement:—

3.

(South Tipperary) asked the Taoiseach the annual value of agricultural imports to Great Britain over the past five years from (a) Denmark, (b) New Zealand, (c) Australia, (d) Canada and (e) the Irish Republic.

4.

(South Tipperary) asked the Taoiseach the annual value of total agricultural imports from all sources to Great Britain over the past five years.

I propose, with your permission, Sir, to take Questions Nos. 3 and 4 together.

While trade statistics relating to imports to Great Britain alone are not available, certain relevant data can be obtained relating to imports to Great Britain, including the Channel Islands, and the Six Counties.

In the case of many commodities which have both an agricultural and an industrial content there is no way of deciding uniquely whether they are to be classified as "agricultural" or not and, in fact, the criteria adopted in such classifications may, to a large measure, depend on the uses to which the data are to be put. Two such classifications made by international bodies of imports to Great Britain and the Six Counties may be cited which give quite different aggregates.

I propose, with your permission, Sir, to circulate in the Official Report a statement giving for the years 1956-61, the latest available periods, the data for imports into Great Britain and the Six Counties (a) classified, in the Trade Year Book published by the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations, as "Food products, other agricultural products and forest products" and (b) classified in Agricultural and Food Statistics published by the OECD as "Food and agricultural products".

No similar analysis has, so far as is known, been published for such imports distinguishing country of origin and neither the basic information nor the resources are available to make the compilation.

Following is the statement:—

ALUE of Imports into Great Britain and the Six Counties in 1956-61 classified as (a) Food products, other agricultural products and forest products (FAO), (b) Food and agricultural products (OECD).
