Vol. 216 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Mineral Exploration.

38.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce what Mineral exploration has been carried out in South Tipperary and West Waterford in the past three years; and what findings have been made as a result of such explorations.

In the past three years prospecting licences have been granted in respect of 25 areas, covering a total area of 257 square miles, in different parts of South Tipperary and West Waterford. In general, the mineral exploration carried out consisted of geochemical surveys, followed by geophysical investigation and diamond drilling, if warranted. The findings lodged in my Department are confidential but Gortdrum Mines Ltd. have publicly announced the discovery of copper ore deposits in Gortdrum and neighbouring areas.
