Vol. 216 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Building Trade Slumps.

15.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the steps taken or recommended by the National Building Advisory Council to avoid slumps in the building trade and to ensure a constant supply of houses to meet demands.

I have not yet received any recommendations from the National Building Advisory Council. I understand that they are not yet in a position to put forward firm conclusions or recommendations regarding the matters referred to by the Deputy.

Having regard to the current crisis in the house building industry, will the Minister ask the Council to expedite their consideration of the matter in the hope that some avenue may yet be opened to relieve the crisis?

I gather the Council have had two extensive surveys carried out in order to inform themselves and they are at the draft stage of making recommendations to me as a result of the inquiry.

Could the Minister give an assurance that the Government will make available the finances which will enable the recommendations to be carried out?

That is a separate question.

It is something the Government have been dodging during the past six months.
