Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Community Centres in Dublin.

35.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state fully the powers of Dublin Corporation in the urgent matter of the provision of community centres with facilities for all forms of physical and artistic recreation; and if he will also indicate the percentage of finance which the Government will make available to local authorities for such much-needed projects.

Dublin Corporation has power to provide or co-operate with and assist other bodies in the provision of facilities for physical and artistic recreation under a large number of enactments including the Public Libraries Acts, 1855 to 1947, the Museums and Gymnasiums Act, 1891, the Irish Universities Act, 1908, the Local (Sanitary Services) Act, 1948, the Local Government Act, 1955, the Local Government Act, 1960, the Local Government (Planning and Development) Act, 1963, and the Housing Act, 1966.

Capital may be made available from State sources to finance borrowing for the purposes of these Acts. The payment of subsidy and its amount depends on the type of facility provided.

If Dublin Corporation were to ask the Minister to help financially in the provision of a much needed community centre for, as he put it himself, physical and artistic recreation, in Ballyfermot, which is his own constituency and mine, would the Minister undertake to make financial assistance available to the corporation to enable them to do this? Such a centre is urgently needed.

I will deal with any such request, if and when I receive it.

In other words, the Minister is not saying.

It is a purely hypothetical question.

I will not be hypothetical in the space of a couple of weeks. I can assure the Minister of that.

When I get it I will deal with it.
