Vol. 233 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - School Bus Transport for Pensioners.

11.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware that there are many old age pensioners and people in receipt of disability pensions in rural areas who live a long way from a bus route; and if he will make arrangements to give them free transport on school buses which pass conveniently to them.

The position in relation to the schools transport services is that they are organised for a specific purpose. In many instances the vehicles used are licensed only to carry school children. Furthermore, the capacity of the vehicles is geared very closely to the number of children eligible for transport. In fact, until more vehicles are available, many of the existing ones will be required to make double journeys.

In all the circumstances it would not be possible to accede to the request contained in the Deputy's question.
