Vol. 257 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - “Lourdes Weddings.”

17.

asked the Minister for Health when he proposes to introduce legislation to deal with the problem caused by what are known as the "Lourdes Weddings".

As I have already advised the Deputy in reply to earlier questions, this legislation will be introduced as soon as it becomes possible to do so.

Surely, the Minister must feel terribly ridiculous in making that statement in view of the fact that ten years ago one of his predecessors prepared such legislation and when it was due to come before the House dropped it; and that the Minister has repeated on a number of occasions that he proposed to introduce legislation? Can the Minister not give us a definite date as to when this will be done because serious embarrassment is being caused to many people?

It will be a miracle if it is introduced.

There are differences of opinion about the matter.

In view of the unsatisfactory nature of the Minister's reply, I propose, with your permission, Sir, to raise this matter on the Adjournment.

The Chair will communicate with the Deputy.
