asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether there will be any reduction in the retail price of spirits imported from Britain following the recent reduction in duty levied on imported alcoholic spirits; and, if not, why.

I understand that there was an increase, operative from 1st May, 1972, in the import price of Scotch whiskey to this country equivalent to 1.625p per glass. It will be seen, therefore, that the reduction in the duty on imported spirits of UK origin which is equivalent to 1.617p per glass is counterbalanced by the import price increase. It is unlikely, therefore, that there will be any resulting change in retail prices as far as whiskey imported from the UK is concerned. With regard to other spirits, such as gin and vodka, I am asking the National Prices Commission to have regard to the reduction in customs duty when they are considering their recommendation on the application for an increase in drink prices generally which is at present before the commission.
