Vol. 263 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - National Insurance Contributions.

41.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare the estimated amount lost to the National Health Insurance Fund for the year ended 31st December, 1971, through non-payments of national insurance contributions by employers; and the number of prosecutions undertaken regarding failure of employers to make due contributions.

I presume the Deputy's question refers to the Social Insurance Fund in which the former National Health Insurance Fund was merged in 1953.

During the year ended 31st December, 1971 unpaid social insurance contributions totalling £7,185 were treated as irrecoverable. In the same period summary proceedings were initiated in 158 cases and civil proceedings in 358 cases arising out of the failure of employers to pay social insurance contributions.
