453.

asked the Minister for Education the number of (a) nuns, (b) brothers and (c) priests who were (i) trained and (ii) untrained teachers in the years 1940, 1950, 1960 and at the most recent date in (a) primary and (b) secondary schools.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 452 and 453 together.

Records are not available in a form which would permit of this information being given in relation to the years 1940, 1950, 1960.

The figures for primary schools which relate to 1969 are as follows:

Nuns

Brothers

Priests

Trained

Untrained

Total

Trained

Untrained

Total

1,851

254

2,105

Nil

NOTE 1. The figures under the heading "untrained" relate mainly to young religious awaiting a call to the training colleges.

NOTE. 2 In relation to secondary schools the Department's records do not provide information in the form requested by the Deputy. The position is, however, that the vast majority of all the teachers in these schools are either registered teachers or probationer teachers awaiting registration.
