Vol. 268 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Corporation Property Squatters.

21.

asked the Minister for Local Government the number of squatters in Dublin Corporation property; and if each case will be dealt with on its individual merits.

The information sought by the Deputy is not available in my Department; the administration of their housing estates including the allocation of tenancies, is by law a matter for the local authority.

As I understand it, different cases could have different circumstances and different backgrounds and are there any criteria or does the law treat people as numbers rather than as human beings?

As Deputy Lemass probably knows, before certain action was taken recently the corporation did consider and did appoint a number of those who were squatters because of the particular circumstances to be ordinary tenants. Further than that I do not want to interfere in what Dublin Corporation will do about this issue. It is a matter entirely for them.

The Minister might keep an eye on it.
