Vol. 268 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Speed Limits.

29.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will request the appropriate local authority to increase the existing speed limit of 40 mph on the Naas Road, Dublin between Long Mile Road and Newlands Cross.

Under the Road Traffic Acts the determination of speed limits is a function of the Minister for Local Government. Having regard to the recently constructed section of dual-carriageway on the Naas Road between Robinhood Road and Newlands Cross, and the resultant substantial improvement in standard. I am examining the question whether an increase in the existing speed limit on this section would be warranted.

The Minister will accept that, contrary to what he said to me some months ago, the 40 mph speed limit signs are still up.

I said a month ago that I was not aware that there were 40 mph speed limits on certain portions of that road and it appears that on this particular portion there are still 40 mph speed limits.

And it is not a dual carriageway. It is six lanes, three lanes each way.

The Deputy might consider, perhaps, that a dual carriageway is two lanes. The Deputy may be thinking of four lanes.

30.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will consider increasing the speed limit to 50 mph on national primary roads for certain lorries (details supplied) which cannot attain top gear at the present speed limit of 40 mph.

There are no plans on hands at present for any such revision.
