Vol. 271 No. 12

Local Elections (Petitions and Disqualifications) Bill, 1974: First Stage.

Leave granted to introduce a Bill entitled an Act to make provision in relation to local election petitions, to make provision in relation to membership disqualifications with regard to local authorities, to enable certain restrictions on holding office under or being employed by a local authority to be modified, to repeal certain enactments relating to local elections and to make other provisions connected with the foregoing.
—(Minister for Local Government.)

When will the Bill be circulated?

During the recess. I should be grateful if the Opposition would arrange to discuss this measure very early after the recess because I should like to have it enacted before mid-May.

We will have to have a look at it first.

It is non-contentious. Could we say 24th April?

It would be no use ordering it for the 24th April because our principal spokesman would not be able to take it before 30th May at the earliest.

Could we order it for the 24th of this month? As I say, it is not a contentious measure and someone else might be able to deal with it.

There would be no obligation to take it on 24th April.

Very good. Then it can be ordered.

Second Stage ordered for Wednesday, April 24th, 1974.
