Vol. 330 No. 1

Written Answers. - County Dublin Chemical Works.

415.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will investigate allegations of the release from time to time of nitric acid fumes from the chemical works of a company (details supplied) in County Dublin; and the steps his Department can take to ensure that there will be no repetition of such dangerous fumes escaping into the atmosphere in the vicinity of the densely populated residential area of Tallaght, County Dublin.

Under the Control of Atmospheric Pollution Regulations, 1970, the investigation of allegations of this kind are a matter for the sanitary authority, in this case, Dublin County Council.

I understand that the county council received complaints last July from the residents' association regarding alleged damage to vegetation in the area claimed to be due to the emission of acid fumes from a factory on a nearby industrial estate, and that analysis by the supervising health inspector of samples of vegetables from gardens in the area failed to establish the existence of chemical damage.

I am informed that the council have requested the local residents' association to contact them in the event of further concern so that there can be immediate investigation of the matter.
