Vol. 333 No. 2

Written Answers. - Work Force.

165.

asked the Taoiseach the proportion of the labour force who were married women in 1960, 1970 and at the latest date for which figures are available.

166.

asked the Taoiseach the proportion of the work force whose spouse was also working in 1960, 1970 and at the latest date for which figures are available.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 165 and 166 together.

The information available on married women in the labour force is that obtained from the 1961 and 1971 censuses of population and the 1979 sample labour force survey, on the basis of which married women accounted for 2.2 per cent, 3.5 per cent and 7.8 per cent, respectively, of the total labour force in April 1961, 1971 and 1979.

Information on the numbers of these married women whose husbands were not in the labour force is not compiled and thus the information sought on the proportion of the labour force whose spouse was also working is not available.

167.

asked the Taoiseach the proportion of the work force who were unemployed in 1960, 1970 and at the latest date for which figures are available.

The number of persons unemployed accounted for 5.6 per cent, 5.8 per cent and 6.0 per cent, respectively, of the total labour force at mid-April 1960, 1970 and 1980.
