Vol. 347 No. 1

Written Answers. - Drift Net Salmon Licences.

320.

asked the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry if he is aware of the threat to the livelihoods of traditional fishermen by the issuing of drift net salmon licences to deep seafishermen, many of whom are engaged in other professions and some of whom use others as fronts for obtaining the licences; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am not so aware. The criteria of eligibility for commercial salmon licences are contained in the Control of Fishing for Salmon Orders, 1980 and 1982 and the Control of Fishing for Salmon (Kerry Fishery District) Order, 1982. The licences are issued by the relevant regional fisheries boards and must comply with the requirements laid down in the orders.
