Vol. 398 No. 1

Written Answers. - Primary School Pupil Testing.

John Bruton

Question:

216 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Education if all primary school children undergo the Drumcondra test of basic competence in reading, writing and arithmetic; and if not, the reason.

While the Department encourage schools to use standardised testing, it is not compulsory for them to do so. The Department do not prescribe any particular tests.

As the Deputy will be aware, the remit of the Primary Curriculum Review Body covers the whole area of curriculum at the primary level and this area will be considered in the report.
