Note:
This table takes account of the transfer of functions out of the Civil Service during the period 1981-1990 to An Post, Telecom Éireann and Coillte Teo. It also takes account of internal changes within the Civil Service, mainly in the following functions: Tourism, Transport, Industry, Commerce, Communications, Marine, Forestry and Fisheries. Figures are where possible kept consistent with current departmental responsibilities. Thus, although there was no Department of the Marine until 1987, this table shows figures back to 1981, which represent a best estimate of the numbers engaged in that function.
