Vol. 423 No. 1

Written Answers. - Social Welfare Payments.

Michael Noonan

Question:

416 Mr. Noonan (Limerick East) asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will outline the circumstances which led to a person (details supplied) in County Limerick being required to sign for social welfare assistance on a daily rather than on a weekly basis; if he will give an assurance that this is only a temporary measure; and if he will make arrangements to have the person restored to weekly signing at the earliest possible date.

Question:

418 Mr. Noonan (Limerick East) asked the Minister for Social Welfare the reason a day was deducted from the unemployment benefit of a person (details supplied) in County Limerick; and if he will examine the case with a view to rebating the amount in respect of the deduction.

It is proposed to take Questions Nos. 416 and 418 together.

The person concerned has been in receipt of Unemployment Benefit from 29 May 1992 to date. It came to my Department's attention recently that she might not be fulfilling the statutory conditions for receipt of Unemployment Benefit and, following an investigation, she was requested to sign for this benefit on a daily basis. The position will be reviewed at the end of this month when the question of her returning to weekly signing will be considered.

She did not receive payment on 5 August 1992 as she did not sign for Unemployment Benefit on that day.
